Anglers now its your turn to Protect the Wild Brown Trout in Lough Sheelin
The LSTPA have been active in the protection of Wild Brown Trout and their habitat in Lough Sheelin since its inception in the 1890’s. Over the years Lough Sheelin has suffered serious threats from pollution and stock degradation. However this trend has been reversed in the last number of years and we are now in a position where there are large numbers of wild trout present in the lake. This will not continue unless anglers through their club continue with the efforts of stream rehabilitation and habitat restoration. In order to protect Wild Trout within the lake the LSTPA have embarked on a campaign to encourage anglers to practice catch and release.

Following a very successful competition on Lough Sheelin on 14th May between the anglers representing Ireland this year the following 8 Anglers qualified to fish for Ireland in the 2012 International ITFFA competitions.
Andy Duncan 6 fish ..............................Seamus O'Loughlin 4 fish
Fechin McMorrow 4 fish.........................John Walsh 2 fish
Sean Bowen 4 fish.................................Aidan Heffernan 5 fish
Robert Reilly 7 fish................................Frank Kelly 4 fish
The visiting anglers experienced the incredible Mayfly hatch that Lough Sheelin is famous for. 62 fish were caught by 22 anglers, as the competition was run on a catch and release basis, all fish were returned safely to lough Sheelin, including fish of 7lb,6lb,5lb,4lb and smaller. The LSTPA would like to thank all the local boatmen who made this catch and release competition possible and who willingly gave their boat anglers expert advice .

Eamon Ross secretary guides Michael Monaghan Lough Conn on the skills necessary to catch wild brown trout on Lough Sheelin on 7th april 2011, ( is this the earliest known main Mayfly hatch for Lough Sheelin?),
Both anglers passionately believe in the protection of Irish wild Brown Trout and both work tirelessly to promote this aim, both fish were safely returned to the lough,
Winner Kilroy Cup 2011 Eamon Ross with a trout 4.88lb, this is the second year in a row that Eamon has won, well done! Click on centre picture above to open image
Dear Member
The fish off for the Irish international team is being fished on the Lake on the 14th May. The club is looking for 14 volunteer boatmen who will assist in the running of the competition on a catch and release basis. Anyone interested in helping out please contact me.
The youth fishing and training day has been provisionally set for the 23rd July this year. Further details later.
Martin O’Grady has just completed his annual fish stock survey on the lake. Results are very positive and encouraging. However it must be realised that Lough Sheelin is a lake in recovery and we should do all we can to encourage catch and release of wild trout. The LSTPA policy is that we should kill no more than one wild trout per day and no more than three in any week.
Anyone wishing to pay their membership sub can
do so at the Kilroy Cup or can send €30 to myself
at the above address or to Thomas Lynch Omard Kilnaleck
Co Cavan.
I look forward to seeing you on the 20th
As announced at the AGM there is a benefit night being held in Crover house on 18th March (9pm –closing time) in aid of the fund set up for Lawrence Finney’s son Mark who has been injured in a road traffic accident. Lawrence has been a good supporter of the lake. The night will consist of a session of traditional music with local and visiting musicians. Voluntary contribution on the night. There will also be some items of tackle for auction on the night.
